2009/2010 A Midsummer Night’s Dream
A Midsummer Night’s Dream
Awakened for Sandford Park School’s Drama Society Production in Midwinter 2010
The select few chosen to view the rising winter sun on the 21st of December, will be treated to a fleeting few minutes of brilliant light illuminating the the chill walls of the inner passage of Newgrange. That is, if it’s a clear morning.
However, the fortunate multitudes that came to view the rising stars in the Sandford Park Lilburn Hall that very evening were warmed by the glow of a midsummer sun – and the glittering lights of the stage in the Drama Society’s production of Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream.
Following closely on last year’s production of King Lear, it may seem somewhat repetitive to do yet another Shakespeare. But the two plays are as far apart in temperament as winter and summer, night and day, tragedy and comedy.
One of the most performed plays by any playwright in all of history, A Midsummer Night’s Dream is a sumptuous yet simple, gentle yet chaotic, benign yet mischievous exploration of the capricious vagaries of romantic love.
The play was being performed in collaboration with Alexandra College. Lynn Brehony has again lent her valuable expertise and assistance in casting the seven 5th Year girls. Molly O’Cathain, who was also in 5th Year in Alexandra, was working with our own Marie Brennan on the production design. The boys have all been cast from Transition Year. The first major rehearsal was held on the 1st of October, 2009.
