Poetry Society

The Sandford Park Poetry Society meets once a week with the purpose of exploring this unique form of human expression outside of the more formalised constraints of academic analysis. Students from all year groups are invited.

As an art form, poetry has the capacity to use language in a concentrated way to dive headlong into the human experience. In our weekly meetings, participants are encouraged to introduce poems of particular interest to them, where we openly discuss a poem’s imagery, symbolisms and themes, as well as its aural and visual appeal. We explore how a poet marries content and style. Members are also encouraged to compose their own poems to be shared and discussed with the group.

Although we use the English language as the vehicle for discussion, we also explore the universality of poetic language by looking at poetry from around the world. Beginning in the 2024-25 school year, we will be introducing a school-wide poetry competition. Students across all year groups will be invited to submit original poems to be judged in junior and senior categories.
