Sandford Park Centenary 2022

On the 12th of September 1922, Sandford Park School opened its doors to 53 day and boarding pupils, having relocated from Earlsfort Terrace to Ranelagh. In August 2022, Sandford began celebrating its centenary year. Now home to over 400 pupils, the school has remained at the forefront of educational excellence for a century.

To mark this remarkable milestone, a series of events and activities took place throughout the academic year under the theme “Embracing the Future and Honouring the Past.”

Sandford Park School Centenary Gala Dinner

The celebrations commenced in October 2022 with the Sandford Park School Centenary Gala Dinner, held in the International Hotel in Ballsbridge. This black-tie event welcomed parents, pupils, and staff, both past and present.  Featuring speeches from alumni, a fundraising auction, and musical performances by current students. The evening celebrated 100 years of Sandford’s legacy and brought together the wider school community.

Arduus Ad Solem

In December 2022, Sandford proudly launched its centenary book, Arduus Ad Solem – A History of Sandford Park School. Co-authored by past pupil Dr Thomas Earls Fitzgerald and staff member Mr Diarmuid Curraoin, the book offers a rich and engaging account of the school’s history, meticulously compiled from the archives. The launch event took place in Lilburn Hall and was attended by parents, alumni, and friends of the school.

Centenary Crest and School Assembly

To mark the centenary visually, a new school crest was designed, commemorating 100 years of educational heritage. The entire school community gathered for a special assembly, reflecting on key moments from the past century and acknowledging the contributions of students and staff over the decades. Each student received a commemorative Sandford Park School keyring and a specially made centenary cupcake.

Time Capsule Project

A centenary time capsule project brought the student body together in a unique way. Each class selected and voted on an item to represent their experience of Sandford Park, presenting their choices and their significance. Students also recorded their predictions for what school life might be like 100 years from now. The capsule, containing all contributions, was ceremonially buried in the school’s memorial garden.

Alumni Visits and Reunions

Throughout the year, alumni were encouraged to visit the school for tours and reunions. Sandford has long valued its connection with former pupils and maintains an active Past Pupils’ Union that supports both formal and informal school events. Many such visits were undertaken including the Classes of 1955/56 and 1972/73 where several alumni travelled from overseas for these memorable reunions. Indeed, many of the group had not returned to Sandford in over 50 years, making the occasion particularly special.
